ThefilmwasproducedbeforetheMotionPictureProductionCodewasenforced.Themessuchasmurder,rape,cannibalismandprostitutionareinterwovenintothestory.Thefilmwasoneofthelastfilmsmade,alongwithWarners'MysteryoftheWaxMuseum(1933),inthetwo-colorTechnicolorprocess.Blackandwhiteprintswereshippedtosmalltownsandtoforeignmarkets,whilecolorprintswerereservedformajorcities.
